Tell your story

Why is philosophy important to you?

Have you studied it in school or on your own?

Has it made an impact on your life or on someone's you know?

Is there a book or a philosopher you regard as most important to you?

When do you first learn about philosophy and what it could do?

If so, tell us. We want to know.

Each episode of Why? features at least one pre-recorded "vignette" recounting a person's own experiences with philosophy and how it has impacted his or her life. We would love to broadcast your story too.

To submit your story, mail us an MP3 recording of it, no longer than two minutes, to whyradioshow@und.edu

Only a few vignettes will be broadcast on the radio, but most (depending on quality) will be posted in the IPPL digital archives. We hope to create a library exploring the numerous ways philosophy impacts people's lives.

Poor quality recordings cannot be broadcast on the air, so when recording, please follow the basic guidelines:

- please begin each essay with "My name is _____ and for me, philosophy is ____

-send a (written) draft of the essay to askwhy@und.edu and wait until you are contacted before you actually record the essay.

- eliminate all background noise..

- don't just read your story. Show some enthusiasm. Rehearse. And remember, your voice is all we can hear so act (just a little) while you are talking to your audience.

- use the best quality recorder and microphone available. There are many free audio recorders available on the web, our favorite is Audacity. It allows you to edit as well, so you can refine your final product.

- Be honest. Share your feelings and experiences (within reason, of course). It is the personal connection that most connects with our listeners. They don't have to be persuaded that philosophy is worthwhile, they just want to celebrate it with other interested people.
